Spurs COVID-19 Hiatus Content - JUSTIN WINGET

In March 2020, COVID-19 forced our Spurs Brand Engagement Team to literally audible overnight on all content, digital, marketing, retail, and creative strategies planned for the season. In the months that ensued with all creative resources dedicated to digital content, we ranked among the NBA top five in social engagement by flexibly shifting to lighthearted, reflective, and highly participative digital strategies that fans were looking for.

BUSINESS OBJECTIVES:

• Rank among the NBA top five in social engagement during the hiatus
• Keep the Spurs brand top of mind by staying engaged with fans and followers
• Generate opportunities for sponsored content
• Promote broadcast tune-in for game replays
• Promote the organization’s corporate social responsibility platforms with a pointed focus on social justice
• Develop player generated content supporting topics and causes important to them
• Produce fan excitement for return to play in the Orlando bubble

ACTIVATION TACTICS:

• Gamified content through Instagram Stories and the Spurs App
• Presented opportunities for fans to co-create published content
• Celebrated pinnacle moments in Spurs franchise history
• Showcased past and present Spurs players in a lighthearted and relatable nature
• Capitalized on pop culture moments and social media trends
• Developed popular episodic content series’ for owned channels
• Authored and published Spurs branded educational activities under the Coyote Kids Club
• Gave fans and followers behind the scenes access narrated by Spurs players, coaches, photographers, and other staff
• Created “best-of” highlight reels from the 2019/20 season
• Highlighted community building initiatives taken by individual players and the organization as a whole
• Shared organizational support for deeply rooted social justice issues
• Promoted NBA return to play in the Orlando bubble
